I spent this weekend making a new cosplay to wear at CTRF this fall, and plotting a photo shoot for yet another new cosplay, so that sort of thing is on my mind today. So, I thought I’d share with you some of the things I’ve done in the past.
I spend a lot of time working at Renaissance Faires, so when I began cosplaying I knew I had to find a way to make my costumes fit into that setting, no matter who the character was. The first character I tackled was Loki, who I approached as a sort of Lady-Loki-by-way-of-the-Avengers. It wasn’t too hard of a leap to turn Alexandra Byrne’s costumes from the movies into something I could wear at the ren faires, and I was so happy with the result that it wasn’t long before I was planning even more outfits.
I still love Loki so much that, despite my love for this outfit, my brain wouldn’t stop designing new ways to approach the character. Which means that later this fall, about two years after this first cosplay, I’ll be unveiling my Loki v.2 outfit, which I’m really excited for!
It was an easy jump from Loki to thinking about the Avengers themselves, and by later that year, I had finished Renaissance versions of Iron Man and Captain America. And my assistant, Kate, had used the same approach to create a Captain Marvel cosplay that has even been complimented by Kelly Sue DeConnick herself, which is pretty awesome.
My most recent cosplay, which I unveiled — appropriately enough — at Time Travelers’ Weekend at the Connecticut Renaissance Faire last year — was a departure from the Marvel universe. I decided to put a sort of Victorian / steampunk spin on my interpretation of the Tenth Doctor. And the Faire was even kind enough to have a TARDIS on site, providing the perfect backdrop for pictures.
All three (well, two plus Loki v.2) of my new cosplays will make their debut this year at the Connecticut Renaissance Faire. Plus, I’m sure I’ll be wearing some of the others as well — certainly Ten will make another appearance during Columbus Day weekend for Time Travelers again! So keep an eye out for pictures — or better yet, come out and join us, and see them in person!
