Doctor Who returns later this month, and while I’m a season behind on the show since our household “cut the cable” a couple of years ago and we no longer have easy access to the BBC, I know the Whovians out there are eager to see Peter Capaldi pilot the TARDIS for one more series.

In honor of the good Doctor’s return, today we’re going to spotlight some of my favorite items from our Doctor Who-inspired line.

First up is the Ace jacket patch ($24), which began as a custom order for a customer looking to put together a costume based on the seventh Doctor’s (Sylvester McCoy) companion Ace. This two-part package includes the giant A and a separate “ce” — and we’d like to let you know that we have made replicas of some of the other patches featured on the character’s signature jacket, so if you’re looking for one (or more), contact us!

We have several bags for Whovians, but we’re always amused by our TARDIS-inspired bags, available in small messenger ($37) and tablet size ($52) through our website — and we can easily make it in laptop size as a custom order. The larger sizes come with interior pockets, which will make people think it’s larger on the inside than it looks on the outside!

I jumped on the Doctor Who fandom train back when SyFy (then the Sci-Fi Channel) broadcast the revival starring Christopher Eccleston, so I have a soft spot for the “Bad Wolf” storyline. We have several items featuring our interpretation of the Bad Wolf graffiti, but one of our favorite uses is on this necktie ($17), made of silvery-gray silk.

Today is Groundhog Day, which people know either as the day people disturb some poor sleeping marmot to inaccurately predict the weather for the next six weeks, or as the Bill Murray comedy about a weatherman trapped in a time loop with Andie MacDowell.

time-travellerWe prefer the latter, personally, so in honor of that fine piece of comedic cinema, we’re going to do a little time-traveling, starting with our Time Traveler Geek Merit Badge ($8 on our web store). We’d like to point out it’s totally coincidental that our design invokes the opening credits for the current iteration of Doctor Who. Our patch came out several years before Peter Capaldi stepped onto the TARDIS.

tardis-scarfSpeaking of the good Doctor, we all know that he has quite the fashion sense. So can you if you buy one of our Time Lord Seal scarves to keep warm this winter (however many weeks it may last. We’re looking at you, Mr. Groundhog). This scarf ($21 on our web store) is made of soft blue cotton flannel and is embroidered in silvery-gray thread.

Now, we admit that our Doctor’s Name messenger bags aren’t bigger on the inside, but they have plenty of space to hold a hardcover book (messenger size, $36 on our web store), a tablet computer (tablet/netbook size, $51 on our web store), or a full-size laptop (laptop size, $56 on our web store). The tablet and laptop sizes are padded to protect electronics and have adjustable straps.

Happy Monday, everyone! Hope it’s warmer where you are, because we’re dealing with single-digit temps and a generous layer of snow.

I wanted to remind everyone that we will be retiring several of our designs at the end of the month, so if you’d like to grab one while we still have them, you have about three weeks left to do so. After that, the items will be removed from our website and Etsy shops forever. All items listed are patches unless otherwise specifically noted.

Happy Hump Day, everyone!

In the past, the first Wednesday post of the month was dedicated to talking up our show schedule, but now that we’ve retired from the con and faire scene, we’ve decided to make this time slot a showcase for some of our classic designs — and we promise to try to make them more interesting than simply tossing up an item and saying, “Hey, remember this one? Maybe you should buy it!”

ribbonFortunately, our first featured classic item has a story behind it — and by first item, I mean this was literally the first patch we sold under the Storied Threads banner: the Doctor Who Awareness Ribbon.

The year was 2011 and Storied Threads was still a clothing and costuming business, and I was brainstorming ways to make my items more interesting and unique. I decided to experiment with adding embroidered details and purchased a simple one-needle embroidery machine.

Some time later, while my husband was driving me to the commuter rail station — I had a full-time day job at the time — we wound up behind a car that was absolutely covered in various awareness ribbon magnets. Moments before we’d been talking about Doctor Who, specifically the Tom Baker era, and Mike suggested, somewhat jokingly, I make a Doctor Who Awareness Ribbon patch invoking Baker’s iconic scarf.

On a whim I ran with the idea, just to see how it would be received. I made a few to sell at the Robin Hood Springtime Festival, and they blew out of my tent in record time. I literally could not keep them in stock.

That patch’s success inspired me to try out other designs, and that was the beginning of Storied Threads’ transition to embroidered merchandise. For that reason it still holds a special place in my heart.

Buy the Doctor Who Awareness Ribbon now for $9 through the Storied Threads webstore.

Happy New Year! Hope everyone had a great weekend and you’re ready to hit the ground running for 2017!

We know we’re ready to go, and the first thing we’re doing is a little spring cleaning (metaphorically, of course) within our line of products. Twice a year we look at our sales figures and decide whether to retire items that no longer sell well, and today we’re announcing the retirement of several patch and accessory designs.

You’ll notice a lot of our pop culture-inspired items are on this list. This is part of our ongoing effort to move away from fan art-type products and focus on properties in the public domain and wholly original designs, such as our Geek Merit Badge line, and in the coming months we plan to continue whittling away at these sections of our website.

But for now, here is a comprehensive list of items we will be retiring at the end of the month, so if you see anything here you’d like to buy, you have until January 31 to do so. After that, the items will be removed from our website and Etsy shops forever. All items listed are patches unless otherwise specifically noted.

Last week I appeared before a Worcester Chamber of Commerce B2B group that promotes its members to other businesses they deal with day to day. I had to prepare a brief presentation on Storied Threads, and I included in that presentation a picture of my first embroidery machine.j350e

It was a Janome 350e, and I’d originally bought it for the purpose of adding embroidery to my clothing designs, but then I came up with my Doctor Who Awareness Ribbon patch and began the transition to an all-embroidery company.

The original machine was ill-suited for making patches and embroidering designs on scarves, pirate sashes, and bags as it had only one needle, which meant I had to spend time manually changing thread colors, and that slowed the process down a LOT. I remember bringing that machine, some pre-cut templates, and my various threads with me to the Robin Hood Springtime Festival so I could make new stock after each show day. If I was lucky, I could make two patches before bedtime — and I stress, IF I was lucky.
