This weekend, my husband Michael will be heading out to his first rehearsal for the upcoming Robin Hood Springtime Festival, and this is a special rehearsal process for him because this will be his first production as the show’s fight director.

That’s why I’m using today’s space to spotlight our Stage Combat Geek Merit Badge ($8), a revamped version of our original stage combat patch. For those of you who don’t get the concept, the numbers indicate the attack and defense positions on an actor’s body as per the Society of American Fight Directors stage combat system.

Remember, we also offer this design on several items in our Redbubble shop.

This Friday is National Beer Day, so we thought it would be appropriate to revisit our Beer Snob Geek Merit Badge ($7).

This idea came up during a brainstorming session one morning while we were waiting for a convention day to begin and was quickly developed and put into production. We had to experiment a bit to get the tones of the glass right to give it a sense of dimension, and we debated long and hard about which color would be best for the beer itself before settling on a color reminiscent of a Samuel Adams Boston Lager (one of my husband’s personal favorites).

That said, if you’re interested in this design but you’re a fan of a paler brew like a pilsner or a darker beer such as a porter or stout, we can easily customize the color at no additional charge.

Today we’re spotlighting Geek Merit Badges with a decidedly supernatural air, because we’ve got a new design cooking that will fit this theme perfectly.

It’s been a while, but we have a new addition to our Geek Merit Badge line, inspired by a suggestion from a customer.

Our new design is the Demon Hunter Geek Merit Badge, featuring a malevolent-looking goat head based loosely on legends that portray devils and demons as having goat-like features. The patch is $7 on our web store.

We also offer this design on a sticker through our Redbubble shop.

…but it’s aliens.

ufologistFirst up in our collection of out-of-this-world patches is a couple of Geek Merit Badges, starting with the UFOlogist ($8), for that aspiring flying saucer-seeker. This patch features a glow-in-the-dark tractor beam for a special extra(terrestrial) touch.

xenolinguisticsOnce you’ve been abducted, you’ll want to communicate with your new alien friends, at least well enough to ask them not to experiment on you. For that handy skill we have the Xenolinguistics Geek Merit Badge ($8). Fun fact: the alien language is actually the word “hello” spelled out in Microsoft Word wingdings!

WarOfWorlds

Sadly, alien visitors are not always friendly. Sometimes they just want to burn our civilization to the ground and terraform the planet — such as the invading Martians did in H.G. Wells’ classic War of the Worlds. Our War of the Worlds-inspired bookmark ($10) depicts a Martian tripod turning its deadly heat ray on London.

XFilesOf course, you might not believe in little green men, so for you skeptics we have one of our all-time best-selling items, the X-Files-inspired “I Want to Believe” patch ($8). We also make this design available on small messenger bags ($38) and tablet bags ($53). Want it on a laptop-size bag? Contact us and ask us about it!

On Tuesday we unveiled our new Notorious RBG patch, so in keeping with the theme of persistent women, we’d like to spotlight a few designs that should appeal to strong women — and those who stand behind them.

PawneeGoddessesFirst we have the Pawnee Goddess patch ($14), one of our best sellers. Wear this and let everyone know you are a goddess, a glorious female warrior, queen of all that you survey, and enemies of fairness and equality will hear your womanly roar.

Though She Be LittleNext is another favorite among our customers, the “Though she be but little, she is fierce” patch ($7), quoting the great line from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The quote is also available on an embroidered bookmark ($8).

poc-superheroEven if you don’t have superhuman abilities, you might be a real-life superhero — someone who gives of herself to benefit others and fights injustice wherever you find it. For you, we have the Superhero Geek Merit Badge ($8). We have four variations, for women and men, for people of color and in Caucasian flesh tone.

Today is Groundhog Day, which people know either as the day people disturb some poor sleeping marmot to inaccurately predict the weather for the next six weeks, or as the Bill Murray comedy about a weatherman trapped in a time loop with Andie MacDowell.

time-travellerWe prefer the latter, personally, so in honor of that fine piece of comedic cinema, we’re going to do a little time-traveling, starting with our Time Traveler Geek Merit Badge ($8 on our web store). We’d like to point out it’s totally coincidental that our design invokes the opening credits for the current iteration of Doctor Who. Our patch came out several years before Peter Capaldi stepped onto the TARDIS.

tardis-scarfSpeaking of the good Doctor, we all know that he has quite the fashion sense. So can you if you buy one of our Time Lord Seal scarves to keep warm this winter (however many weeks it may last. We’re looking at you, Mr. Groundhog). This scarf ($21 on our web store) is made of soft blue cotton flannel and is embroidered in silvery-gray thread.

Doctors Name Small 2

Now, we admit that our Doctor’s Name messenger bags aren’t bigger on the inside, but they have plenty of space to hold a hardcover book (messenger size, $36 on our web store), a tablet computer (tablet/netbook size, $51 on our web store), or a full-size laptop (laptop size, $56 on our web store). The tablet and laptop sizes are padded to protect electronics and have adjustable straps.
