This Friday is National Beer Day, so we thought it would be appropriate to revisit our Beer Snob Geek Merit Badge ($7).

This idea came up during a brainstorming session one morning while we were waiting for a convention day to begin and was quickly developed and put into production. We had to experiment a bit to get the tones of the glass right to give it a sense of dimension, and we debated long and hard about which color would be best for the beer itself before settling on a color reminiscent of a Samuel Adams Boston Lager (one of my husband’s personal favorites).

That said, if you’re interested in this design but you’re a fan of a paler brew like a pilsner or a darker beer such as a porter or stout, we can easily customize the color at no additional charge.

It’s been a while, but we have a new addition to our Geek Merit Badge line, inspired by a suggestion from a customer.

Our new design is the Demon Hunter Geek Merit Badge, featuring a malevolent-looking goat head based loosely on legends that portray devils and demons as having goat-like features. The patch is $7 on our web store.

We also offer this design on a sticker through our Redbubble shop.

…but it’s aliens.

ufologistFirst up in our collection of out-of-this-world patches is a couple of Geek Merit Badges, starting with the UFOlogist ($8), for that aspiring flying saucer-seeker. This patch features a glow-in-the-dark tractor beam for a special extra(terrestrial) touch.

xenolinguisticsOnce you’ve been abducted, you’ll want to communicate with your new alien friends, at least well enough to ask them not to experiment on you. For that handy skill we have the Xenolinguistics Geek Merit Badge ($8). Fun fact: the alien language is actually the word “hello” spelled out in Microsoft Word wingdings!

WarOfWorlds

Sadly, alien visitors are not always friendly. Sometimes they just want to burn our civilization to the ground and terraform the planet — such as the invading Martians did in H.G. Wells’ classic War of the Worlds. Our War of the Worlds-inspired bookmark ($10) depicts a Martian tripod turning its deadly heat ray on London.

XFilesOf course, you might not believe in little green men, so for you skeptics we have one of our all-time best-selling items, the X-Files-inspired “I Want to Believe” patch ($8). We also make this design available on small messenger bags ($38) and tablet bags ($53). Want it on a laptop-size bag? Contact us and ask us about it!

As we’ve recently remarked, every so often we take a look at our designs and consider whether to keep them as part of our catalog or retire them — the latter decision usually prompted by a decrease in customer interest, but sometimes we’re so fond of a particular design we can’t bear to get rid of it. That’s when we get creative a re-purpose the design, such as when we adapted our Dracula-inspired “The Blood is the Life” patch into one of our embroidered bookmarks.

stage-combat-gmbToday we’re unveiling another old favorite design we’ve given new life in the form of our newest Geek Merit Badge! We took our old stage combat patch and re-branded it as part of the GMB line, and now we have a cool companion piece to our Stage Manager and Theater Geek badges. The Stage Combat Geek Merit Badge is now available at our webstore for $8.

Yep, it’s that time of year again, when we take the lazy way out and regale you with an end-of-the-year countdown lisitcle kind of thing. But let’s be honest; you’re probably too geared up for your New Year’s Eve festivities to put much effort into reading anything, so it benefits both of us.

So here we go, the top items of 2016!

PATCHES

  1. TerrifiCon_PawneeGoddessPawnee Goddess. For the second year in a row, a late-year surge in sales for Halloween pushed this patch to the top of our best-seller list. We made more than 100 of these patches this year!
  2. X-Files: I Want to Believe. Our longtime number one best-seller continues to do well and has a lock on the number two slot.
  3. Plague Survivor Geek Merit Badge. Another longtime top seller, which this year barely eked out its spot at number three over another Geek Merit Badge…
  4. Final Girl Geek Merit Badge. This design got a big boost after it was featured in an article online (sorry, I can’t find it again to re-post the link). It was a top ten seller last year and barely missed the number three position by one sale. Maybe next year!
  5. Though She Be But Little, She Is Fierce. Another past top ten seller making it into the top five! I’m always thrilled when someone buys a Shakespeare patch.

In the interest of efficiency, I’ll just spotlight the top items across my non-patch catalog of items.

Away Team Science Small 1The best-selling bag of 2016 is the blue Science version of our Star Trek-inspired Away Team bags. These were always the best selling bags at shows and we hope the love for them continues in 2017, our first year as a strictly online business.

Our top scarf design was the Harley Quinn-inspired harlequin scarf. Our best-selling necktie design featured the anti-demonic possession tattoo from Supernatural — which, I will note, will soon be retired as a design, so if you want to get one, go order one now! And our top embroidered bookmark was inspired by the greatest stage direction of all time, from Shakespeare’s A Winter’s Tale, “Exit, Pursued by a Bear.”

One of the gifts we received at Christmas was a copy of the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot. While the original is still our favorite, we enjoyed the new version a lot (and I think we can all agree it was WAY better than Ghostbusters 2).

mass-hysteriaWith that in mind, this week we’re spotlighting some of our ghostly designs, starting with a patch inspired by one of the many, many quotable lines from the original film. The Mass Hysteria! patch ($10 at our web store) features a cat and a dog living together in perfect harmony — surely a sign of the end of days.

Ghost HunterNext, for all you aspiring Ghostbusters, we have the Ghost Hunter Geek Merit Badge ($8 at our web store), which features a ghost that glows in the dark. Oooo, spooky!

Finally we have this simple patch featuring a cute little ghost trying its best to scare you (and failing adorably). This ghost also glows in the dark (as shown below), and you can get it from our webstore for just $8.
