It seems I’ve been chatting a lot lately with friends about the upcoming renaissance faire season, so I thought it’d be appropriate to revisit an older design I introduced specifically to sell at faires and to faire enthusiasts.

lion-rampantThe lion rampant is a historical design common in heraldry. The lion symbolizes bravery, nobility, royalty, strength, stateliness, and valor, while the rampant (standing upright) position — called an “attitude” — symbolizes…uh…whether the lion likes playing with big balls of yarn?

(I actually couldn’t find anything that details any symbolism of a heraldic animal’s stance, but if anyone out there knows, feel free to share with the class!)

We offer a classic lion rampant in two sizes: large, for use on a knightly surcoat or on the back of a jacket ($16); and as a small patch, also suitable for modern clothing ($9).

Happy New Year! Hope everyone had a great weekend and you’re ready to hit the ground running for 2017!

We know we’re ready to go, and the first thing we’re doing is a little spring cleaning (metaphorically, of course) within our line of products. Twice a year we look at our sales figures and decide whether to retire items that no longer sell well, and today we’re announcing the retirement of several patch and accessory designs.

You’ll notice a lot of our pop culture-inspired items are on this list. This is part of our ongoing effort to move away from fan art-type products and focus on properties in the public domain and wholly original designs, such as our Geek Merit Badge line, and in the coming months we plan to continue whittling away at these sections of our website.

But for now, here is a comprehensive list of items we will be retiring at the end of the month, so if you see anything here you’d like to buy, you have until January 31 to do so. After that, the items will be removed from our website and Etsy shops forever. All items listed are patches unless otherwise specifically noted.

The Robin Hood Springtime Festival opens in just two days, you guys! In celebration, our theme for this Thursday will be a medieval one.

Lion RampantLion Rampant Patch

This patch features one of the most popular medieval heraldic devices – a lion rampant. We’ve stitched the lion in gold with a red tongue on a black field.  Or, to put that properly in the language of heraldry: Sable, lion rampant or, langue gules.

We’ve made this design is available in two sizes – our standard small shield patch, or in a large size patch suitable for the back of a jacket, or for the front of a knight’s surcoat.

Of course, every knight needs a great leader, which leads us to…

Richard IIIRichard III Patch

Alright, maybe he was only a good leader. Well, he was okay. Sadly, in the end, Richard III was killed in battle, his body dragged off and buried by his enemies who knows where.

Wait, we DO know where! Under a car park, recently discovered, identified, and re-interred with respect at Leicester Cathedral.

You can still buy our No Parkyng patch even though he’s no longer there, though. because let’s be honest – it’s just funny.

You can also purchase the design in our Redbubble shop, available on a variety of products from t-shirts to stickers to travel mugs.

Tudor RoseTudor Rose

Okay, technically this design is Tudor, and not medieval. But since it was Henry VII who defeated Richard III and adopted this as his house sigil, it seems like a pretty fine line to me.

Our embroidered Tudor Rose is available as a patch, on a scarf, or on any of our messenger size bags, so it really gets around. You know — like Henry VIII did.

It’s also available in our Redbubble shop on — you guessed it! — a wide variety of products.

We will have all of these designs – and so much more! – available for sale at the Robin Hood Springtime Festival. The show runs for three weekends, so if you’re in the area, stop on by!

Shields_Before

The KAF shields, before their overhaul.

Before Storied Threads was even an idea I had, I was the costume designer for – among other shows – the King Arthur Festival produced by Pastimes Entertainment.  The show had been running for quite a few years when we decided it was time to upgrade the Knights of the Round Table. Up until then, they had been wearing surcoats and using shields that – while lovely and functional – for the most part didn’t say anything about who they were. And in the case of the shields, even “lovely” was pushing it — they’d taken so much damage from fight scenes and rehearsals over the years that they were more dent and scratch than paint.

So, that year, I started doing some solid research into the heraldry of the knights, as they were described in stories over the years. I also started learning how to interpret heraldic descriptions, as sometimes that was all I could find, especially in relation to some of the more obscure knights. It helped me to learn that “Or, three serpents gules, langued vert” meant three red snakes with green tongues on a gold field, for example. It also helped me to invent a device for characters based on their personality, when no historical or literary references could be found.

All of the knights looked pretty spiffy that year, thanks to a lot of effort by the whole cast. Not only were new surcoats made, but one of our fight directors, Cliff Allen, wrangled a team of volunteers from the cast, and together they realized my designs on all of the knights’ shields as well. The only downside was that nobody wanted to use them after that, knowing the weapons would just put a whole new collection of scratches and dings in the fresh paint!

The flayed man of House Bolton

The flayed man of House Bolton

When I first started vending at conventions, a girl came into my booth loving my patches — and wanting to know if I had one for House Bolton. My immediate reply was that I did not, because ew, the flayed man was way too icky for me to think about digitizing.

For the next year and a half, whenever she saw me at a con, she’d ask again. “You have my House Bolton patch yet?” And every time, I had to say no.

Now? Now, thanks to this one customer, we have a House Bolton patch for all of you who feel inclined to be sympathetic towards Roose and Ramsay and their penchant for skinning people alive. And I really hope she comes to Boston Comic Con this weekend, so that when she asks, I can announce, “Yes! Just for you.”

This patch features my interpretation of the Bolton coat of arms — a red flayed man hung upside down on an X-shaped cross on a black field.

The sew-on patch measures 4.625″ tall by 3.75″ wide.
